5 Days safari in Selous and Mikumi Safari is probably the only classic Safari to Southern Circuit of Tanzania and we offer you the best of it. Starting and ending at Dar es Salaam this safari takes you to the Greater Selous Ecosystem and gives you the rare chance to experience real African Wilderness in the few untouched areas of Tanzania. Unlike the packed Tourist Areas of the North during the peak safari seasons, This safari gives you the opportunity to be in the secluded middle of an African wilderness with the whole Savannah almost for your own. This is the best place to be if you want that ‘away from the crowds’ safari.
This our 5 day safari in Selous Game Reserve & Mikumi National Park as it is, is a nice mid range lodging safari but we can offer the same package using other upgraded accommodations if you wish or even cheaper places where possible. Ask for free Customization!
Selous and Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar
The same safari can start and end at Zanzibar as we can also arrange a fly in safari straight into Selous Game Reserve. If you are flying from Zanzibar to the Selous Game Reserve you have two options to choose from. You can either choose to fly from Zanzibar to Selous Game Reserve where you will meet up with our safari guide or you can fly early in the morning to Dar es Salaam to start the safari by road together with our safari guide. The cost for these options differ.

Dar es Salaam - Road transfer to Nyerere National Park
Your 5 Day Safari in Southern Tanzania begins with a comfortable 4-hour drive from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) via the new, smooth Kisarawe road.
You’ll arrive in time for a hot lunch at camp and a short rest.
In the late afternoon, head straight to the jetty for an unforgettable sunset boat safari on the Rufiji River. Drift past wallowing hippos, basking crocodiles, drinking elephants and countless birds as the sky turns gold – one of Africa’s most spectacular experiences.
Return to camp as the stars come out for dinner and your first night in the wilderness.
Overnight at Nyerere Tented Camp Lunch & dinner included.
Explore the vast Nyerere National Park
Spend two full days immersed in Nyerere National Park – Africa’s largest national park and one of the continent’s last true wilderness frontiers.
Your private 4×4 game drives take you across vast open plains, miombo woodlands and along the Rufiji River in search of huge elephant herds, buffalo, giraffes, impalas, hartebeests, elands, lions, leopards and – with luck – packs of the ultra-rare African wild dogs, one of the park’s signature sightings.
Because Nyerere sees far fewer visitors than the Northern Circuit, the wildlife is beautifully shy and the experience feels genuinely wild and unspoiled. Bird lovers will be thrilled too – over 350 species have been recorded, from fish eagles to giant kingfishers.
On one of these days you’ll swap the vehicle for a guided walking safari with an armed ranger. Feel the thrill of tracking animals on foot, learning to read spoor and getting closer to nature than you ever thought possible.
Return to camp each evening as the sun sets over the river.
Overnight at Nyerere Tented Camp. All meals included.
Nyerere - Transfer to Mikumi National Park
Arrive at Mikumi in time for an afternoon game drive across its open plains – often called the “Little Serengeti”. Look for healthy lion prides, large herds of elephants, giraffes, zebras, and the park’s famous yellow baboons. With far less infrastructure than the Northern Circuit, Mikumi retains a beautifully raw and untouched feel.
Optional: add a guided walking safari with an armed ranger for an intimate, on-foot experience (subject to availability).
Return to camp as the sun sets for dinner and overnight.
Overnight at Camp Bastian, or similar. All meals included.
Mikumi National Park - Dar es Salaam / or fly to Zanzibar
Alternatively, opt for a guided walking safari with an armed ranger if you’d like one last intimate bush experience.
Around noon, check out and drive back to Dar es Salaam (approx. 5–6 hours). Or, if you prefer, we can arrange a quick afternoon flight from Mikumi airstrip to Zanzibar.
Breakfast and lunch included. End of your 5-day Nyerere & Mikumi safari from Dar es Salaam.
If you are planning on visiting Zanzibar for beach vacation and wish to try a wildlife safari experience starting from Zanzibar please do not hesitate to contact us any time.
