Nyerere National Park Recognized as One of Africa’s Top National Parks

Spanning an immense 30,893 square kilometers, Nyerere National Park is not only Tanzania’s largest national park but also the biggest in East Africa. Since its establishment in 2019, this vast wilderness has rapidly risen to prominence, recently earning a spot among the Top 50 Best Safari Parks in Africa. According to the 2024 rankings by SafariBookings.com, Nyerere secured the 27th position—an impressive feat that underscores its growing reputation as a world-class safari destination.

Nyerere National Park voted amongst the best

The rankings were based on 2,384 reviews, combining feedback from 1,239 safari travelers from 74 countries and insights from 1,145 safari experts. Anita Kovalevska of SafariBookings.com highlighted that the study evaluated 196 parks across 15 African countries, including renowned safari hotspots in Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, and Botswana.

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park once again claimed the top position, while other Tanzanian gems like Ruaha, Katavi, and Tarangire also featured prominently in the rankings. Despite its relative youth, Nyerere proudly joined this elite list, solidifying its place alongside iconic destinations.

Nyerere National Park’s evolution is remarkable. Carved out of the historic Selous Game Reserve in November 2019 during the tenure of the late Tanzanian president; the Late John Pombe Magufuli, the park initially welcomed just 151 visitors. Today, it attracts around 60,000 tourists annually and generates approximately 11 billion Tanzanian shillings in revenue.

Many visitors opt for day trips, flying in from Zanzibar for exhilarating game drives before returning in the evening. However, efforts are underway to encourage longer stays, with luxury accommodations by renowned brands like Foxes Camps, Serena, Asilia, and Nomads now operating year-round within the park.

We at Tanzania Safari Desire offer both Day trips from Zanzibar to Nyerere National Park, as well as multi day trips from Dar es Salaam, like our 05-Day Safari in Selous & Mikumi National Park.

Accessibility and Unique Experiences at Nyerere National Park

Nyerere’s accessibility enhances its appeal. Just a three-hour drive from Dar es Salaam via the Kisarawe route, it is also reachable by air, road, or rail. Once inside, visitors can explore its diverse landscapes through game drives, boat safaris on its waterways, and even scenic flights. Flights from Zanzibar to Mtemere Airstrip at the Nyerere National Park’s Mtemere gate take only 45 minutes.

Boasting a size greater than Belgium and Lesotho combined, Nyerere is a conservation marvel. Its rich biodiversity and dramatic scenery make it a haven for nature enthusiasts seeking an authentic African safari experience.
